Frequently Asked Questions FAQ’s ADSL - Can I use my telephone line to connect to the Internet through DSL?
- Your telephone signal can run more than one ADSL lines. ADSL is a DSL type which is suitable for home use. ADSL might be more suitable for your needs, since it some cases spares you the need to have internal cabling, given that you can define an existing number for the ADSL conversion.
- Do I need an extra telephone line to use DSL?
- In most cases the answer is no. Only one line is required (i.e. line-distribution). ADSL functions in a different frequency series than traditional voice telephones. The difference in frequencies allows both voice and IP (Internet) distribution to coexist in the same physical telephone line. You must simply have line filters (they are provided with the service you have selected as part of the installation pack) to connect to the telephone sockets which you wish to use for conventional voice devices.
- Do I need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) for a DSLconnection?
- When you have a DSL connection, you are assigned with an IP address. The ISP (Internet Service Provider) is responsible to allocate this address and to distribute packets from the Internet to this address.
Your ISP’s quality is an important factor which affects your DSL connection’s performance and reliability, and the extent of technical support you will receive when you are facing problems. The ISP provides your gateway to the Internet. When data leave your house, they are not transferred instantly to the Internet, but they are transferred to your ISP first and then to its Internet gateways. The ISP provides a DNS service for a static IP address for small businesses, and allocation management of active IP addresses (DHCP) in the rest of the cases. ISPs also provide email services, Usenet server and more IPs if required. It is also the first contact place for installation issues, invoicing and resolving technical problems. - How much time is required for installation, once the application has been submitted?
- It could range from a week to a month.
- What is a DSL connection?
- DSL (Digital Subscription Line) is a continuous Internet connection which is installed on a socket on your wall and looks like a telephone socket.
- A DSL connection is charged with a fixed monthly fee and includes unlimited use. This means, whether you are using it for email purposes once a day, or whether your are browsing the Internet for hours, your bill will always be the same.
- When you acquire a DSL line, you can use all Internet resources you were using with your regular modem and the dial-up connection. The difference is that you can use it 24 hours a day without any delay in the connection. You do not need to worry abour busy line signals or any connection/disconnection procedure.
- The basic advantage of a DSL connection compared to a dial-up modem is speed. DSL is up to a dozen times faster compared to a modem connection. A complicated website which could require up to a minute to open through a 56K modem, can open in a few seconds through a DSL connection.
- I live in an apartment, not a house. Can I get DSL?
- You should be able to get a DSL service, given that your lines can support it.
- Which are the maximum download and upload speeds?
- Maximum download speed and upload speed that you can get from OTEnet Telecoms Home Services vary as follows:
- Download speed: 4 mbps – Upload speed 512kbps
- Download speed: 2 mbps – Upload speed 512kbps
- Download speed: 1 mbps – Upload speed 256kbps
- What is the fastest speed that an be achieved through a DSL connection?
- There are many factors that must be taken into consideration in order to answer this question.
- Regular speeds for OTEnet ADSL do not exceed 4Mbps on the download and 512kbps on the upload (Mbps = megabit per second). However, there are special connections for office available which exceed the above speeds.
- There are two limitations which apply in most connections: the modem and the cabling used to transfer the signal from the modem to the computer. The cabling from the modem to the computer is usually a category 5 modem, or a thin Ethernet cable, therefore it limits speed to 100Mbps.
- The maximum speed achieved for ADSL lines is approx. 20 mbit per second for download and 1 mbit per second for upload, depending on the DSL packet. Nevertheless, most DSL users are connected with speeds lower or equal to 8 mbit, whether they dispose of ADSL.
- Can MAC work with DSL?
- Macintosh platform is connected to the Internet through the same protocols used by the Windows platform. In theory, this would mean that Macintosh can use any type of service which Windows are using.
- You must consider two things: First is the hardware. DSL modems need an Εthernet card installed in your computer, which some computers do not dispose of. If your computer does not dispose of a Ethernet card, you must acquire one by a supplier. You must make sure that the card is Macintosh compatible (most of them are). Second is the software. Most suppliers have the necessary software required for connection, but you must asked for it anyway, otherwise they will probably assume that your computer is using Windows.
- How can I cancel my home ADSL subscription? Will I pay any cancellation fees?
- You can cancel your ADSL subscription by sending a fax to 96969882.
In the letter you should include your name, ID number and the fixed line number which your ADSL home product uses. In the case that you don’t have the fixed line number or you are unsure about it you can send the reference number in your invoice. On cancellation you are obliged to return the modem provided by OTEnet-telecoms to any Germanos’ store or in MTN Cyprus building at 87 Kennedy Avenue, Nicosia 1077. The cancellation fees along with any outstanding amount will be added in your next invoice. Fees: • If you cancel the subscription after being a subscriber of OTEnet for more than a year and the modem is returned then there are no cancellation fees. • If you have been a subscriber for more than a year and the modem is not returned then the cancellation fees are €50 • If you have been a subscriber for less than 12 months on the date of cancellation and you return the modem then the cancellation fees are €50 • If you have been a subscriber for less than 12 months on the date of cancellation and the modem is not returned then the cancellation fees are €100 |
